About

Big Bog State Recreation Area offers five winterized camper cabins in the Southern Unit, located along the Tamarac River in remote northern Minnesota. The area encompasses a 500-square-mile peatland, the largest in the lower 48 states, and features the longest boardwalk in the United States stretching one mile into the bog. The camper cabins are compact 12x16-foot wooden structures equipped with bunk beds, a table, benches, ceiling fan, and propane fireplace for heat. Cabins 2 through 5 each accommodate six guests with two bunk beds (double on bottom, single on top), while Cabin 1 is ADA-accessible and sleeps five. All cabins include electricity, a screened porch, deck, outdoor picnic table, and fire ring. Guests must bring their own linens. Indoor cooking is limited to crockpots and coffeepots only. The nearby campground provides access to a shower/restroom facility, with a family-style shower/restroom at the visitor center available 24/7 year-round. The Southern Unit also features a boat launch, fishing docks along the river, fish cleaning house, and sandy beach. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system.
