Cut Foot Horse Campground
Open for the 2026 season, first-come, first-served only. Potable water may not be available; campers should bring their own supply. A food storage order is in effect requiring proper bear-safe storage of all food and scented items.
About
Cut Foot Horse Campground sits within the Cut Foot Experimental Forest in Minnesota's Chippewa National Forest, managed in partnership with the North Central Research Station. The 34 nonelectric equestrian sites are nestled among mature red pines with scattered oak and birch, providing good shade and privacy. Each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring, and access to hitching racks and picket lines for horses. Manure pits are provided throughout the campground. Over 120 miles of forest roads and recreation trails radiate from the camp, accommodating horseback riders, hikers, mountain bikers, and off-road vehicles on designated routes. The Cut Foot Experimental Forest features research areas marked throughout; visitors should leave all markers undisturbed. Big and Little Cut Foot Sioux Lakes and Lake Winnibigoshish are within a few miles, offering boating, swimming, and fishing opportunities. A large group fire pit area is available for communal campfires. Campers should use the provided picket lines when tying horses to minimize tree damage, and must remove all manure and hay to the designated pits before departing.
Directions
From Deer River, travel northwest on Highway 46. Drive 3.2 miles past the Cut Foot Sioux Visitor Center, then turn left on Forest Road 2171 and continue approximately 2-3 miles to the campground entrance on the west side of the road.
