Big Bog Campground sits along the Tamarac River in the southern unit of Big Bog State Recreation Area, providing year-round camping access to Minnesota's last true wilderness. The campground offers 31 drive-in sites, with 26 electric sites featuring both 30 and 50 amp service and 5 non-electric sites. A centrally located shower and restroom building and fish cleaning house serve all campers. The Tamarac River, a slow-moving waterway that begins in the bog and flows into Upper Red Lake, runs through the campground with a boat launch and numerous docks available for visitor use on a first-come, first-served basis. Established in 2000 to boost the Waskish area economy, Big Bog State Recreation Area encompasses 9,459 acres centered around the 500-square-mile Big Bog, the largest patterned peatland in the contiguous United States. From the campground, visitors can walk to the sandy swimming beach on Upper Red Lake, a remnant of Glacial Lake Agassiz with a shallow, sandy bottom perfect for wading. The visitor center, open year-round with 24/7 restroom access, features a 100-foot fire tower offering panoramic views of Upper Red Lake, Highway 72, and the sprawling bog. The recreation area's northern unit, located 9 miles north on Ludlow Island, features a mile-long accessible boardwalk through the peatland, allowing visitors to experience rare plants and wildlife including carnivorous sundews, orchids, and waterfowl in a landscape once home to the last woodland caribou herd in the lower 48 states.
