Big Bay State Park Campground

Open

Open through Labor Day 2026. The campground and beach parking lot close September 8, 2026 through approximately June 30, 2027 for road repaving, culvert replacement, and facility renovations. Water systems and showers operate seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through early October.

About

Big Bay State Park Campground occupies a prime location on Madeline Island's eastern shore, surrounded by 4 miles of Lake Superior coastline marked by distinctive sandstone bluffs. The 60-site family campground includes 21 sites with electrical hookups and 7 walk-in sites positioned 100-400 feet from parking. A separate outdoor group camp lies about a half-mile from the main campground with modest lake views. The campground features centrally located flush toilets and showers, with a vault toilet near the entrance. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Five plowed sites (26-30) with electric hookups remain available for winter camping by reservation. Water systems including showers and drinking fountains operate seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through approximately October 1. Reaching the park requires a ferry crossing from Bayfield to Madeline Island via the Madeline Island Ferry Line. Campers should note that firewood cannot be transported into the park but is available for purchase on-site. Wheeled campers must park on driveways only, and tent campers must use designated tent pads.
