Big Basin Redwoods Sp Wastahi Campground

Closed

Wastahi Campground is permanently closed and will not reopen. Following the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire, California State Parks determined that campgrounds in sensitive old growth areas, including Wastahi, would be removed and restored to old growth redwood habitat. Camping at Big Basin is being relocated to sites on the forest edges.

About

Wastahi Campground was located in the heart of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park, nestled among ancient coast redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The campground featured approximately 27 walk-in tent sites accessed via a short walk of up to 200 yards from a centralized parking lot, with five separate trails leading to clusters of campsites. Each site was equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and food storage locker. The August 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire devastated Big Basin, destroying all historic structures and radically transforming the landscape. As part of the subsequent Reimagining Big Basin Facilities Management Plan, California State Parks determined that campgrounds in the most ecologically sensitive old growth areas, including Wastahi, Blooms Creek, and Sempervirens, would be permanently removed and restored to old growth redwood habitat rather than rebuilt. Camping at Big Basin has been relocated to sites on the forest edges at Huckleberry, Lower Sky Meadow, Upper Sky Meadow, Sequoia Group Camp, and Little Basin. Visitors seeking camping in this region should consider Rancho del Oso on the coastal side of the park or the relocated campgrounds once they open.
