About
Huckleberry Tent Cabins provided a distinctive camping option at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, combining the comfort of cabin amenities with the immersive experience of camping among towering coast redwoods. Located in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the tent cabins historically offered visitors a convenient base for exploring the park's extensive trail system, including access to Skyline to the Sea Trail and numerous waterfall hikes. Big Basin Redwoods, established in 1902 as California's first state park, preserves over 18,000 acres of ancient redwood forest. The Huckleberry area sits within this remarkable ecosystem where some redwood trees reach heights comparable to the Statue of Liberty and date back 1,000 to 1,800 years. The park's diverse habitats range from lush canyon bottoms to chaparral-covered slopes, supporting abundant wildlife including deer, bobcats, and diverse bird species. On August 18, 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through 97% of the park, destroying all historic structures and campground infrastructure including the Huckleberry Tent Cabins. While most old-growth redwoods survived and the forest is recovering vigorously, camping facilities remain closed as California State Parks manages the multi-year rebuilding process. The park now offers limited day-use access only, allowing visitors to witness the remarkable forest regeneration and resilience of these ancient redwood groves.
