Big Basin Redwoods State Park, established in 1902, is California's oldest state park and home to the largest continuous stand of ancient coast redwoods south of San Francisco. The Sequoia Group Campground offered group camping experiences beneath towering old-growth trees, some over 1,000 years old and reaching heights exceeding 300 feet. The park was devastated by the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in August 2020, which burned approximately 97% of the park including nearly all structures and campground facilities. While the ancient redwoods are showing remarkable resilience and regrowth, the campgrounds remain closed as California State Parks undertakes a comprehensive rebuilding effort through the Reimagining Big Basin project. The rebuilding plan includes restoring car camping, cabins, small and large group sites, walk-in sites, and trail camps along the edges of the old-growth forest. The park is currently open for day-use only with parking by advance reservation, offering access to hiking trails, fire roads, the visitor center, and interpretive programs while recovery continues.

From Santa Cruz, take Highway 9 north to Boulder Creek, then turn west on Highway 236 and continue approximately 9 miles to the park entrance at 21600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, CA 95006.
