Big Basin Redwoods Sp Huckleberry Campground

Closed

Closed indefinitely for post-fire reconstruction. All Big Basin campgrounds have been closed since the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. Huckleberry is planned for rebuilding but no reopening date has been announced. Limited walk-in camping is available at Rancho del Oso on the coastal side of the park.

About

Huckleberry Campground is located within Big Basin Redwoods State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains, home to the largest continuous stand of ancient coast redwoods south of San Francisco. The park, established in 1902 as California's first state park, was devastated by the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in August 2020, which destroyed 97% of the park's infrastructure. As part of the Reimagining Big Basin project, Huckleberry Campground is slated for reconstruction on the edges of the old growth forest. The rebuilt campground will include a variety of accommodation types: car camping sites, cabins, small group sites, large group campsites, walk-in sites, and trail camps. Unlike three former campgrounds (Blooms Creek, Sempervirens, and Wastahi) that will be retired to restore old growth habitat, Huckleberry is designated for rebuilding. The park's recovery involves hazard tree removal, culvert replacement, infrastructure assessment, and debris removal. A new Saddle Mountain welcome center with visitor facilities and a shuttle system for weekend access to the old growth core are also planned. Construction timelines remain uncertain pending completion of design and permitting phases.

Directions

From Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, turn north onto Highway 236. The park entrance is 9 miles down Highway 236. The campground is located approximately 1.5 miles from the park headquarters area along Sempervirens Creek. All roads into Big Basin are curvy mountain roads.
