Waterman Gap Trail Camp sits on a wooded ridgetop along the legendary Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail in Castle Rock State Park. Located 6.3 miles from the north end of the trail at Saratoga Gap, this primitive backcountry camp offers 6 designated campsites, each accommodating up to 6 people. The trail camp provides a true wilderness experience in the Santa Cruz Mountains backcountry, though some highway noise from nearby Highway 9 can be heard. Facilities are minimal, as befits a backcountry trail camp. Each site has basic amenities, and vault toilets are available. Food storage lockers are provided and required for all food storage to protect against wildlife. No water is available on-site, so campers must bring their own or treat surface water before drinking. The camp is popular with through-hikers on the multi-day Skyline-to-the-Sea route and serves as a common first-night stop. Access to Waterman Gap requires hiking several miles on trails that close at sunset, so hikers must arrive at camp before dark. The trail camp connects to Castle Rock State Park's extensive 34-mile trail system. Fires are not permitted. Backpacking stoves may be used for cooking except during extreme fire danger. Reservations are required and can be made up to 60 days in advance through California State Parks.

Access via Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail from Saratoga Gap (6.3 miles) or from Castle Rock State Park main parking lot (9.3 miles). Overnight parking at Robert C. Kirkwood Parking Lot on Highway 35.
