Big Basin Redwoods Sp Blooms Creek Campground

Closed — Permanently closed. Blooms Creek Campground was destroyed in the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire and is proposed to be removed and restored to old growth redwood habitat rather than rebuilt. All campgrounds at Big Basin Redwoods State Park remain closed with no camping available.

About

Blooms Creek Campground was one of three campgrounds located within the old growth redwood areas of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park established in 1902. The campground featured upper and lower sections situated on either side of Blooms Creek, offering visitors the opportunity to camp among ancient coast redwoods, some more than 50 feet around and as tall as the Statue of Liberty. On August 18, 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through 97% of Big Basin's property, destroying all historic structures and park infrastructure, including all campgrounds. While most of the old growth redwood trees survived the fire, the campground facilities were completely lost. As part of the park's rebuilding plan released in 2024, California State Parks has proposed that Blooms Creek Campground, along with Sempervirens and Wastahi campgrounds, be permanently removed and the areas restored to old growth habitat rather than rebuilt. This decision reflects a commitment to protecting and expanding the park's ancient redwood forest ecosystem. The park remains open for day use with limited access, but camping reservations are not available as all campgrounds remain closed.

Directions

The campground was located in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, approximately 25 miles northwest of Santa Cruz via Highways 9 and 236, and about 65 miles south of San Francisco. From Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, the park entrance was 9 miles north on Highway 236.
