The park is undergoing multi-year rebuilding, with campgrounds planned to be reconstructed at Sky Meadow locations in the future. No reopening date has been announced.

Sky Meadow Group Campground is situated within Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park established in 1902. The park encompasses over 18,000 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains, featuring ancient coast redwoods that are 1,000 to 1,800 years old, some more than 50 feet around and as tall as the Statue of Liberty. The park offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, numerous waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems ranging from lush canyon bottoms to chaparral-covered slopes. On August 18, 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through 97% of the park, destroying all historic structures and campground facilities. Most old-growth redwoods survived the fire, and the forest is actively recovering with new plant life and returning wildlife. California State Parks is managing a multi-year rebuilding process. According to the rebuilding plan, campgrounds will be reconstructed at several locations including Lower Sky Meadow and Upper Sky Meadow areas, with plans for various camping configurations including group sites. The park remains a unique destination for experiencing ancient redwood groves and the resilience of these remarkable ecosystems.

Directions

Located in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, approximately 25 miles northwest of Santa Cruz and 65 miles south of San Francisco. From Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, turn north onto Highway 236 and continue 9 miles to the park entrance. All roads into Big Basin are curvy.
