Portola Redwoods Sp Redwoods Group Camping Area
Closed — Campground closed for the season. Construction is underway through March 23, 2026, with most of the campground closed, though some group sites may remain open. No online reservations are currently available.
About
Portola Redwoods State Park's group camping areas offer a secluded retreat in a naturally forested basin of coast redwoods, Douglas fir, and live oak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The park encompasses 2,800 acres of rugged terrain, with group sites designed for organized camping experiences accommodating up to 45-50 people. The camping areas are tent-only, requiring groups to pack in all supplies from the parking area. The park's 18 miles of trails crisscross the canyon system formed by Peters Creek and Pescadero Creek, providing access to waterfalls, old-growth redwoods (including one of the tallest in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 300 feet), and diverse ecosystems. A short nature trail along Pescadero Creek reveals the area's geological history, including marine deposits from when the ocean covered the region. The forested environment supports black-tailed deer, coyotes, mountain lions, and endangered species including the marbled murrelet, coho salmon, and steelhead trout. The park is located deep in the mountains via steep, winding roads off Highway 35, requiring 1.5 to 2 hours driving time from most Bay Area locations. No gasoline or stores are available at or near the park. The quiet, remote location provides an escape from nearby Silicon Valley and South Bay urban areas, though cell service is limited and rideshare services are not recommended.
Directions
From Highway 35, turn west onto Alpine Road, go 3 miles, and turn onto Portola State Park Road. The road dead ends in the park. Use low gear as both roads are steep and winding. Expect a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from most Bay Area locations.
