Big Basin Redwoods Sp Sempervirens Campground

Closed

Sempervirens Campground is permanently closed and will not reopen. The campground was destroyed in the August 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. Per the Reimagining Big Basin rebuilding plan, this site will be removed and restored to old growth habitat rather than reconstructed. Currently, the only camping available in the park is at Rancho del Oso on the coastal side, offering five walk-in campsites and one bike-in site.

About

Sempervirens Campground was one of several campgrounds nestled within the ancient redwood groves of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, located 25 miles northwest of Santa Cruz in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The park, established in 1902 as California's first state park, was named after the coast redwood's scientific name, Sequoia sempervirens. In August 2020, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire swept through 97% of the park's property, destroying all historic structures and campground facilities including Sempervirens Campground. The fire caused catastrophic damage to the park's infrastructure while the ancient redwoods themselves began regenerating from their bases. The California State Parks Reimagining Big Basin project has determined that Sempervirens Campground, along with nearby Blooms Creek and Wastahi campgrounds, will not be rebuilt. These former campground sites in sensitive old growth areas will instead be restored to old growth habitat. New camping facilities with equivalent capacity will be constructed at the forest edges at Huckleberry, Lower Sky Meadow, Upper Sky Meadow, Sequoia Group Camp, and Little Basin.
