About

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is a nearly 800-acre sanctuary showcasing Rio Grande Valley woodlands and brushlands in their near-natural state. As a designated World Birding Center, the park hosts approximately 360 recorded bird species including green jays, great kiskadees, and rare South Texas specialties. Beyond birds, visitors encounter javelinas, bobcats, and an exceptional diversity of butterflies. The park offers five primitive tent-only campsites located 3/4 mile from the parking lot. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and includes a picnic table and lantern post, with three fire rings shared among campsites. Restrooms with showers are available nearby. Campers must pack out all trash. No vehicles are allowed in the park interior, preserving the peaceful environment. Seven miles of trails wind through the park, including the 1.8-mile wheelchair-accessible Rio Grande Trail. The two-story Hawk Observation Tower provides panoramic views of the canopy and Mexico. The park offers tram tours, bike rentals, a park store with field guides and optics, and an exhibit hall. Busy season runs September through April when winter Texans and birders converge on this exceptional habitat.
