About
Estero Llano Grande State Park sits at the geographic center of the World Birding Center network in Weslaco, Texas, offering the largest wetlands environment in the entire network. The 230-acre refuge spans shallow lakes, thorn forests, and woodlands that attract a spectacular array of South Texas wildlife. In late summer when water is at a premium, hundreds of waders and shorebirds flock here, including endangered Wood Storks, along with colorful coastal species like Roseate Spoonbills and Ibis. The park features boardwalks, observation decks, multi-use trails, and a visitor center. Over 340 bird species have been documented here, including Valley specialties such as Groove-billed Ani, Altamira Oriole, and rare Red-crowned Parrots and Green Parakeets. The park is primarily a day-use facility open 7am to 10pm. Overnight accommodations are available exclusively through Camp Thicket, which offers group barracks-style lodging. The North Complex has five bunkhouses sleeping up to 80 people total, while the South Complex sleeps up to 46 people. Both complexes feature full kitchens with stoves, ovens, and refrigerators, plus bathrooms with showers. There are no individual tent or RV camping sites available.
