About

Malaquite Campground is the primary developed campground at Padre Island National Seashore, located 3.2 miles south of the park entrance and just north of the Malaquite Visitor Center. The campground sits between vegetated dunes with easy access to the Gulf beach. Campers with a paid site can also pitch a tent on the beach directly in front of the campground. The 48 sites include 24 paved sites backing up to the dunes and 24 sites on gravel and grass, six of which are designated tent-only with parking across the road. Sites measure 40 feet long by 18 feet wide. Each site has a picnic table, and some include charcoal grills and shade structures. Amenities include year-round flush restrooms, free cold-water showers, potable water, and a dump station on the road into the campground. The Park Store near the visitor center sells ice, snacks, and supplies. Ground campfires are permitted on the open sand beach east of the dunes where flames cannot threaten vegetation. Pets are allowed but must be leashed within six feet at all times. Sites #12 and #13 are designated accessible with unobstructed Gulf views, located near accessible restrooms and showers. The maximum consecutive stay is 14 nights, after which campers must leave for at least 14 nights before returning.

Directions

From the park entrance station, travel south along Park Road 22 for 3.2 miles. Turn left into the campground at the road sign. The campground is approximately 0.5 miles north of the Malaquite Visitor Center.
