Bayview Trailhead and Day-Use Area

Closed — Closed for winter. Typically operates mid-May through mid-October depending on weather and snow conditions.

About

Bayview Trailhead and Day-Use Area sits near Emerald Bay on the south end of Lake Tahoe at 7,100 feet in elevation. This day-use facility serves as a primary trailhead for accessing Desolation Wilderness, a popular backcountry destination in the Sierra Nevada. The area provides vault toilet facilities and parking but no water or camping amenities. A wilderness permit is required to enter Desolation Wilderness from this trailhead. Day hikers can pick up self-serve permits at the trailhead, while overnight hikers must obtain permits before arrival. The trailhead experiences heavy use, particularly on weekends during the summer season. Fire restrictions are strictly enforced: wood and charcoal fires are prohibited in the area. Propane appliances with an on/off valve are permitted with a valid California Campfire Permit. The facility is typically accessible from mid-May through mid-October, with exact dates dependent on snow conditions and weather.
