Axtel Campground is a large U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation area situated on the wooded shores of Rough River Lake in south central Kentucky. The campground offers 158 campsites spread across multiple loops (A through I), with many sites featuring 50-amp electric service and water hookups. Sites accommodate tents, RVs, and trailers up to 40-48 feet depending on the specific location, with back-in access on gravel or paved surfaces. The facility provides substantial amenities including flush restrooms, hot showers, potable drinking water, and an RV dump station. A swimming beach, boat ramp, fish-cleaning station, playground, and short hiking trail round out the recreational offerings. The 5,100-acre lake draws over two million visitors annually and is renowned for bass, crappie, and catfish fishing, with bass tournaments held throughout the season. The surrounding landscape features rolling, forested hills with ancient sandstone, shale, and limestone formations. The area's abundant water has carved numerous sinks and caverns into the limestone bedrock. Mammoth Cave National Park, home to the world's longest cave system, is about an hour's drive away.

Directions

From I-64 West, take Exit 105 toward Palmyra/Corydon onto IN-135 South for 16.7 miles. Continue on Bypass Road KY-79 for 2.1 miles, then turn right onto KY-79 for 10.1 miles. Continue briefly on 1st Avenue/KY-79S, then turn slight right onto US-60 for 11.8 miles. Turn left onto KY-259/KY-79 for 9.7 miles, then turn right to stay on KY-79 for 0.7 miles to 663 South Highway 79, McDaniels, KY. Approximately 74 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes from Louisville area.
