About

Avalanche Campground is a small, primitive facility located along Avalanche Creek in the White River National Forest. The six first-come first-served campsites attract heavy use due to their proximity to one of the primary trailheads into the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The adjacent Avalanche Creek Trail provides access to Hell Roaring Trail, East Creek Trail, West Fork Trail, and Capitol Lake, drawing hikers, backpackers, and equestrians throughout the summer season. Anglers can fish Avalanche Creek directly from camp or head three miles downstream to the Crystal River. Sites accommodate tents, small RVs, and trailers up to 28 feet combined length with vehicle. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table on gravel surfaces with pull-through access available. This is a primitive backcountry-adjacent campground with no restrooms and no potable water. Campers must bring all drinking water and pack out trash. Due to significant bear activity in the Avalanche Creek drainage, proper food storage is mandatory. Bear canisters are required for overnight stays in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.
