About

Atkinson Flats occupies a scenic stretch of the Chiwawa River corridor, nestled on the floor of a dramatic glacial-carved valley in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. At 2,500 feet elevation, the campground offers a secluded backcountry experience with river access and surrounding mountain scenery. The setting provides opportunities for fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing in the broader Wenatchee River Ranger District. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with 7 sites of varying sizes, the largest being 100 feet by 12 feet. Facilities are primitive: vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Payment is $22 per night per site plus $11 for each additional vehicle, with 50% discounts for Interagency Senior, Access, Golden Age, or Golden Access pass holders. The Recreation.gov mobile app allows on-site payment via QR code scanning. Access requires navigating Forest Road 6200 from Leavenworth via WA-207 and Chiwawa Loop Road. The final 5-mile section of Chiwawa River Road is very rough gravel and dirt, making the campground unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles or large RVs. Download the Recreation.gov app before arrival, as cellular service is limited to nonexistent in this remote area.

Directions

From Leavenworth, take US-2 West for about 15 miles. At Coles Corner, turn right onto WA-207 North and travel 4.4 miles. Turn right onto Chiwawa Loop Road and go about 0.5 mile. Stay right onto County Highway 22 and travel 0.8 miles. Take the second left onto Chiwawa River Road/Forest Road 6200 and follow it for about 16 miles. The final 5 miles are rough gravel and dirt, not suitable for low-clearance vehicles.
