About
Aspen Group Area is a reservable group campsite in Lincoln National Forest designed for gatherings of 4 to 70 people. Situated at nearly 9,000 feet elevation in the Sacramento Mountains of south-central New Mexico, the campground provides a cool mountain escape from the desert valley below. The site features a covered pavilion, vault toilets, picnic tables, campfire pits, and grills, all surrounded by a beautiful mixed forest of pine, fir, and white-trunked aspen trees. The area is located near the historic Village of Cloudcroft and offers access to excellent trails. The Osha Trail, a popular 2.5-mile loop, is nearby, and the 32-mile Rim Trail for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding can be reached about a quarter mile from the campground. This region of Lincoln National Forest is also notable as the birthplace of Smokey Bear. Reservations are required and must be made through Recreation.gov. Campers should call the Sacramento Ranger District at 575-682-1518 prior to arrival to obtain the gate lock combination. Check-in is after 2:00 PM and check-out is by noon. Note that potable water is not available on-site; water can be obtained at Sleepy Grass Campground during peak season. RVs are limited to 30 feet or less.
