About
Ash Creek Campground is situated at a lower elevation in the Big Valley Ranger District of Modoc National Forest, allowing it to open earlier in the season than higher elevation campgrounds in the area. The campground features seven first-come, first-served sites surrounded by sagebrush and juniper woodland, offering a true remote wilderness experience with light use even during peak season. Fishing is the primary draw, with Ash Creek regularly stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Multiple fly fishing spots are within walking distance of the campground, making it a favorite among anglers. The Red Tail Rim Trail south trailhead is located just past the campground, offering 22 miles of multi-use trail open to equestrian, mountain biking, and foot travel, with the north trailhead along Highway 299 north of Canby. This is a primitive campground with vault toilets but no water or garbage service. Visitors must bring all water needed for drinking, cooking, and washing, and pack out all trash. A boil water advisory is in effect for any natural water sources. The campground operates on a 14-day stay limit and allows dogs on leash only.
