About

Howard's Gulch Campground is a quiet, tree-lined retreat set back from Highway 139 in the Modoc National Forest. This small campground offers a peaceful setting perfect for a weekend getaway or extended vacation. The campground features a short hiking trail for nature viewing and serves as one of several stops along the Basin and Range Birding Trail within the Modoc National Forest. The Highway 139 Auto Tour and Howard's Gulch Interpretive Sites are recent additions that enhance the educational and recreational value of this area. The Auto Tour begins just south of the campground on Howard's Gulch Frontage Road, providing visitors with opportunities to learn about the region's natural and cultural history. This is a first-come, first-served campground with vault toilets and no potable water, so campers should bring their own water supply. The campground typically operates from mid-May through late October, depending on weather and snow conditions. Sites accommodate small to mid-sized RVs and trailers, with picnic tables and fire pits at each site.
