About
Big Sage Campground is a free, first-come, first-served campground located on the shores of Big Sage Reservoir in the Devil's Garden Ranger District of Modoc National Forest. The reservoir spans several thousand acres and is surrounded by characteristic high desert vegetation including juniper woodland and sagebrush. The campground sits near the boat ramp, making it convenient for anglers and boaters exploring the expansive reservoir. This is a primitive camping area with basic amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits. No potable water is available, so campers must bring sufficient water for drinking, cooking, washing, and extinguishing campfires. The campground sees light use and offers a quiet, remote experience with the 14-day stay limit typical of Modoc National Forest campgrounds. The area is accessible via a combination of paved and gravel roads from Alturas, though winter weather can affect access. The campground typically operates from mid-May through late October as weather permits, with facilities open during those months. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leash, and owners are expected to clean up after their pets.
Directions
From Alturas travel west on Highway 299 for 3 miles. Turn north on Crowder Flat Road/County Road 73 and travel 6 miles. Turn right on County Road 180 and go 3.5 miles to Big Sage Dam and the campground.
