Lake Fort Smith State Park Campground is nestled in the Boston Mountain Valley of the Ozarks, about 8 miles north of Mountainburg, Arkansas. The park sits along the shores of Lake Fort Smith, a scenic reservoir that provides drinking water to the Fort Smith area. The campground offers 30 spacious sites divided into two loops: Loop A with 20 Class AAA sites featuring full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) positioned closest to the lakeshore, and Loop B with 10 Class B sites offering water and 30-amp electric. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring. The park serves as the southern terminus of the 218-mile Ozark Highlands Trail, making it a popular base for serious hikers. Lake activities include fishing for bass, catfish, and bream, with a marina offering boat rentals for those without their own watercraft. A seasonal swimming pool operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The visitor center provides information about local wildlife and trail conditions. Restroom facilities with hot showers are available March through November. During winter months (December-February), the restrooms are closed, though the campground remains open for self-contained RVs. A dump station is available year-round. Reservations can be made through the Arkansas State Parks reservation system up to two years in advance.

Directions

Eight miles north of Mountainburg on U.S. 71; or take Exit #29 off I-540 at Mountainburg. Alternatively, take the Chester exit and follow signs to Scenic Highway 71, then turn north (left) on 71. The park entrance is a short distance on the right.
