North Beach Campground

Open

Currently closed to camping and day use through June 2026 for roadway repairs and Caltrans Highway 1 overpass demolition. Day-use access may resume June 2026 with traffic controls, but camping reopening date remains uncertain pending resolution of road safety issues within the campground area. The remainder of Emma Wood State Beach, including Group Camp, remains open.

High Surf Advisory issued July 20 at 8:13PM PDT until July 21 at 11:00PM PDT by NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA

8:13 PM — July 21st, 10:00 AM

* WHAT...Large breaking waves building to 3 to 6 feet with sets to 7 feet. Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast and Los Angeles County Beaches. * WHEN...Until 11 PM PDT Tuesday, peaking tonight through Tuesday morning. * IMPACTS...There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Highest surf will be focused across south facing beaches due to a southerly swell produced by Tropical Storm Elida. Additional Beach Hazards Statements or High Surf Advisories will likely be needed through the rest of the week due to a series of incoming southerly swells.

About

North Beach Campground at Emma Wood State Beach provides a unique beachfront camping experience on the Ventura County coast, two miles west of downtown Ventura. The 90 unleveled campsites sit directly on the beach along the historic Roosevelt Highway, offering unobstructed Pacific Ocean views. Sites have mixed surfaces of asphalt, dirt, cobble, and ocean debris. This is a primitive campground with no permanent amenities. There is no potable water, electricity, fire rings, phones, or dump station. Portable toilets are provided. Only fully self-contained vehicles up to 40 feet are permitted; tents are prohibited. The campground is adjacent to active railroad tracks and Highway 101, so expect noise. High tide events may cause temporary closures. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leash but are prohibited on the beach itself. When open, reservations are available through ReserveCalifornia for peak season dates from mid-May through Labor Day; at other times sites are first-come-first-served.

Directions

From Ventura, take Highway 101 north approximately 2 miles. The campground entrance is accessible from the highway. When open, follow signs for Emma Wood State Beach North Beach.
