Carpinteria State Beach Campground sits twelve miles south of Santa Barbara, offering a mile of pristine beach and over 200 campsites divided into four loops: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel, named after the Channel Islands. The area was named by Spanish explorers who observed the Chumash tribe building seagoing canoes using naturally occurring surface tar to seal their boats. Today, visitors can explore these same tar seeps, along with tidepools teeming with starfish, sea anemones, crabs, and octopi. The campground accommodates both tent and RV camping, with hookup sites available and a maximum trailer length of 40 feet. Modern amenities include hot showers, restrooms, a dump station, and even EV charging stations. The park operates year-round with site-specific reservations through ReserveCalifornia. From December through May, campers may spot harbor seals, sea lions, and occasional gray whales along the coastline. Dogs are welcome in the campground and day-use areas but are not permitted on the beach in front of the campground. The park offers interpretive programs, a Tomol play area celebrating Chumash culture, and campfire programs during summer months. Enroute camping is available for self-contained vehicles when regular campgrounds are full.
