Santa Cruz Del Norte Backcountry
Open — Open year-round for backcountry camping. Reservations required through Recreation.gov. Island access requires boat transportation; weather may affect scheduled trips.
About
For experienced backpackers seeking wilderness solitude, Santa Cruz Del Norte Backcountry Campground offers a true remote island experience. Currently the only backcountry campground on Santa Cruz Island, Del Norte features four primitive, designated campsites nestled in a shaded oak grove at approximately 700 feet above sea level. The shortest route from Prisoners Harbor is 3.5 miles via the Del Norte Trail. Hikers follow the Navy Road for 1.5 miles with a 600-foot elevation gain before turning onto the Del Norte Trail, which winds through two canyons (Cañada del Agua and Cañada del Muro). An alternate 5-mile route via Navy Road climbs 1,200 feet and offers views of the island's south side. From Scorpion Anchorage, the campground is approximately 12 miles away. Due to difficult weather, rugged terrain, and the physical demands of the hike, this backcountry site is suitable only for experienced, well-conditioned backpackers. Each campsite includes a picnic table, food storage box, and access to a pit toilet. No water is available on site, and campers must pack out all trash. During winter and spring, be prepared for wet creek crossings at Canada del Puerto. Island access requires boat transportation via Island Packers or private boat from Ventura Harbor.
Directions
Santa Cruz Island is only accessible by boat. Boat transportation can be arranged with Island Packers from Ventura Harbor. To reach Ventura Harbor: take Highway 101, exit Victoria or Seaward. From Prisoners Harbor landing, hike 3.5 miles via Del Norte Trail (moderate to strenuous, 600-foot elevation gain). Follow Navy Road 1.5 miles, then turn left onto Del Norte Trail for 1.8 miles through two canyons to the campground junction.
