About

Santa Cruz Island Del Norte Backcountry Campground offers a truly remote wilderness experience on the largest of California's Channel Islands. Opened by the National Park Service to preserve the island's rare wilderness values, this is currently the only backcountry camping option on Santa Cruz Island. The campground sits about 700 feet above sea level in a shaded oak grove, providing scenic views of the island's pristine northern coastline. Reaching Del Norte requires planning and physical fitness. Visitors must first arrange boat transportation to Prisoners Harbor via Island Packers or private vessel, then hike 3.5 miles along the Del Norte Trail. The route follows the Navy Road for 1.5 miles with a 600-foot elevation gain before branching onto the trail, which winds through two canyons before reaching the campground. An alternate longer route (5 miles) via the Navy Road provides views of the island's south side. During winter and spring, hikers should prepare for wet creek crossings at Canada del Puerto. The campground has four designated primitive campsites, each with a picnic table and food storage box. A pit toilet serves the area. No water is available; campers must carry all water needed (one gallon per person per day recommended). Fires are strictly prohibited; only enclosed gas camp stoves are allowed. All trash must be packed out. Due to the difficult terrain and conditions, this campground is recommended only for experienced, well-conditioned backpackers.
