The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds, which is in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday evening. * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 270 Surprise Valley California, Fire Weather Zone 271 Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, and Eastern Sierra Counties, Fire Weather Zone 272 Greater Lake Tahoe and Truckee Area, Fire Weather Zone 278 Eastern Lassen County, Fire Weather Zone 458 Northern Washoe County. * Thunderstorms...Thunderstorm chances increase to 15 to 30 percent for Thursday leading to lightning strikes on dry fuels. Thunderstorms may also produce hail and periods of moderate to heavy rainfall. * Outflow Winds...Up to 50 mph. * Impacts...Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

About

Alpine Meadow Campground is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path destination located at Martis Creek Lake, managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Situated in the Sierra Nevada just 3 miles south of I-80 on Highway 267, the campground provides easy access to Truckee, Lake Tahoe, and Reno while maintaining a peaceful alpine setting among pine trees. The campground features 24 standard non-electric sites, many of which are lakefront with paved driveways. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, bear box, lantern hook, and grill. Vault toilets are available throughout the campground, and potable water can be filled at the campground entrance. Maximum vehicle length is 30 feet, and sites accommodate up to 8 people with a maximum of 2 vehicles. Recreation options include a 4.3-mile hiking and biking trail that loops around the valley, catch-and-release trout fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. The campground also has an amphitheater for ranger programs. Pets are welcome on leashes six feet or shorter.

Directions

From I-80, take Highway 267 south toward Lake Tahoe. After approximately 3 miles, turn onto Martis Dam Road. Continue on Martis Dam Road for approximately 1.2 miles, then turn right and continue 0.2 miles to the campground entrance.
