About

Allison Guard Station is a historic Forest Service compound consisting of eight rustic buildings located in the Malheur National Forest in the Ochoco Mountains of eastern Oregon, approximately 60 miles northwest of Burns. Situated at an elevation of 5,310 feet, the compound was originally built in 1911 as a district ranger station for the Snow Mountain Ranger District and served as the administrative headquarters until the 1950s when operations were moved to Hines, Oregon. The historic compound features the original Donnelly Cabin, built in 1911 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, along with six buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 during the New Deal era. These Depression-era structures represent an important period in Forest Service history. The cookhouse was renovated in 2005. In August 2020, a fire destroyed one building at the compound, though the damage was contained to a single structure. The guard station's remote location in the Ochoco Mountains offers a glimpse into early Forest Service operations and CCC construction techniques.
