About
The Gavan Hill Hut is an emergency backcountry shelter positioned on the Harbor Mountain-Gavan Hill Trail in the Tongass National Forest near Sitka, Alaska. This four-sided shelter provides basic protection from the elements for hikers traveling the rugged 6.2-mile trail that connects Harbor Mountain Road to Baranof Street in Sitka. The shelter is minimally equipped with no stove, no restrooms, and no potable water. Hikers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing their own water, food, and supplies. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is intended primarily for emergency use rather than planned overnight camping. Access from the Gavan endpoint begins at the end of Baranof Street in Sitka, where the trail starts with an 800-foot ADA-accessible boardwalk section before climbing steeply through hemlock-spruce forest via switchbacks to approximately 2,000 feet elevation. The trail and surrounding area offer opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and scenery viewing in this remote Alaskan wilderness.
Directions
From downtown Sitka, the Gavan Hill Trailhead is located at the end of Baranof Street. The shelter is approximately 3 miles up the trail. Alternatively, access from Harbor Mountain Road: travel approximately 4 miles on Halibut Point Road from downtown Sitka, then turn onto Harbor Mountain Road for 5.5 miles.
