About
Deer Mountain Shelter Site is a free, first-come, first-served backcountry shelter in the Tongass National Forest near Ketchikan, Alaska. The 16' x 16' A-frame structure was reconstructed in 2008-09 and sits at 2,900 feet elevation above the timber line, offering expansive views of surrounding mountains and alpine terrain. The shelter provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing in a truly remote alpine setting. Access requires hiking 2.5 miles up the Deer Mountain National Recreation Trail from the trailhead parking area, or approximately 4 miles from downtown Ketchikan. The trail is steep with many switchbacks, gaining 2,000 feet of elevation in the first two miles. To reach the trailhead, follow Ketchikan Lakes Road for half a mile to the junction with Nordstrom Drive, then turn right into the trailhead parking area. The shelter accommodates up to 8 people with two double bunks (4 people) and a sleeping loft (4 people). Inside amenities include a propane stove (bring your own 1-pound canisters), a cooking counter, and a table with benches. There is no restroom or potable water at the shelter, so campers must bring all water and be prepared to pack out all waste.
Directions
From downtown Ketchikan, walk or drive up Ketchikan Lakes Road for half a mile to the junction with Nordstrom Drive (the road to the solid waste facility), then turn right into the Deer Mountain Trailhead parking area. Hike 2.5 miles up the Deer Mountain National Recreation Trail, gaining approximately 2,000 feet in elevation, to reach the shelter at 2,900 feet.
