About

Located near the northern boundary of Catoctin Mountain Park, the Adirondack Shelters offer a true backcountry experience for hikers seeking solitude in mature Eastern Hardwood Forest. The two three-sided shelters, reminiscent of those found along the Appalachian Trail, are accessible via a moderate 3-mile uphill hike over rocky but generally gently rolling terrain from the Camp Round Meadow trailhead. Each shelter accommodates up to 5 people and features basic amenities including a vault toilet and fire ring. The site operates as a pack-in, pack-out facility with no water available on site. Hikers must carry in all drinking water and pack out all trash, including food scraps. Dead and down wood may be collected for firewood, and fires are permitted only in the provided fire rings. The shelters are available year-round by reservation only through Recreation.gov. No walk-in permits are issued. Stays are limited to 7 consecutive days or 14 days total per calendar year. The remote location provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation in nearly 6,000 acres of forest. Winter access may be affected by weather conditions and road closures on Park Central Road and Manahan Road.

Directions

From Route 77, turn right onto Foxville Road and follow signs to Camp Round Meadow parking area at 14840 Manahan Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780. Shelters are accessed via a 3-mile uphill hike from the parking area.
