About

The Adirondack Shelters provide a true backcountry experience within Catoctin Mountain Park, about 60 miles from Washington, DC and Baltimore. Two three-sided wooden shelters sit several hundred feet apart near the park's northern boundary, accessible only by a moderate 3-mile hike over rocky, gently rolling terrain through mature Eastern Hardwood Forest. The trailhead begins at Camp Round Meadow on Manahan Road. This is a rustic, pack-in/pack-out experience. There is no potable water, so campers must carry all drinking water and supplies. One pit toilet serves both shelters. Each shelter has a fire ring and wooden benches. No tents or temporary structures are permitted in or around the shelters. Bicycles, horses, and other vehicles are prohibited on the trail. Reservations are required year-round and must be made through Recreation.gov or by phone. Walk-in reservations are not accepted, and permits are not processed at the park. Check-in is 1:00 PM; checkout is 12:00 PM. Maximum stay is 7 consecutive days or 14 days total per calendar year.

Directions

Take Route 77 west 5 miles to Foxville Road, turn right and follow signs to Camp Round Meadow parking area (14840 Manahan Road, Sabillasville, MD 21780). Hike approximately 3 miles to the shelters.
