The combination of drying fine fuels and leaf litter, low relative humidity of around 35 percent and a southerly wind gusting between 20 and 25 mph during the late morning and afternoon hours, will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread across the southern half of Pennsylvania today. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly. Mont Alto State Park holds the distinction of being Pennsylvania's oldest state park still in the state park system, designated as the state's first forest park in 1902. Situated near the historic Mont Alto Forestry Academy, now part of Penn State University's Mont Alto Campus, this quiet 24-acre park offers a peaceful retreat in southeastern Franklin County along the West Branch of Antietam Creek. The park's centerpiece is its distinctive historic dance pavilion, which can be reserved for group events and accommodates up to 150 people. While Mont Alto does not offer traditional camping facilities, it provides picnicking amenities including tables and a carry-in/carry-out trash program. Anglers can enjoy trout fishing in the creek that flows through the park, and hikers can explore trails within the park and the adjacent 85,500-acre Michaux State Forest. The park features vault toilets and limited facilities appropriate for its role as a small day-use area. Open year-round from sunrise to sunset, Mont Alto State Park serves as a gateway to the larger Michaux State Forest, which offers extensive camping opportunities. The park's location on PA Route 233, one mile north of the town of Mont Alto and seven miles south of Caledonia State Park, makes it easily accessible for day visitors seeking a quiet natural setting in the South Mountain region.
