About
Blacks Pond Campground is a small, primitive camping area on the Ashland Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in southeastern Montana. With only 2 campsites, this intimate campground offers a quiet escape in the middle of a designated watchable wildlife route. The pond itself attracts various species of wildlife, making it an excellent location for nature observation and photography. The campground is located approximately 17 miles south of Ashland, accessible via a series of gravel forest roads. The setting transitions from prairie to ponderosa pine forest, characteristic of this region. The facility is primitive with vault toilets and no potable water, requiring campers to be self-sufficient. Sites include basic amenities with tables and fire pits. Managed on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system, Blacks Pond offers a true backcountry experience. The campground operates seasonally, typically accessible from late spring through fall, though exact dates vary with weather and road conditions. No fees are charged for camping.
