About
Red Shale Campground is a rustic, no-fee campground situated in the Custer Gallatin National Forest on the Ashland Ranger District in southeastern Montana. The campground provides 14 sites on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Basic amenities include vault toilets and picnic tables, some of which are ADA accessible. This is a primitive camping experience with no potable water, no trash service, and no firewood provided. Campers should come prepared with their own water supply and plan to pack out all waste. The campground operates seasonally from April 1 through December 1 and has a 10-day stay limit. The area sees moderate use, and sites can fill up on weekends and holidays during summer months. Arriving by early afternoon is recommended to secure a spot during peak times.
