About
Red Shale Campground is a rustic Forest Service campground located on the Ashland Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest in southeast Montana. Situated at approximately 3,000 feet elevation along US Highway 212, the campground offers 14 campsites nestled among tall pines that provide shade and a peaceful atmosphere. The campground is known for its spacious sites, clean vault toilets, and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. This is a true dry camping experience with no amenities beyond the basics. There is no potable water, so visitors must bring adequate drinking water. The campground does not provide firewood or trash collection service, requiring campers to pack in all supplies and pack out all waste. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The maximum trailer length is 30 feet, and there are no hookups or dump stations available. Basin Lakes National Recreation Trail is located a short distance from the campground, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the area. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. A 10-day stay limit applies. The campground can fill up on summer weekends and holidays, so arriving in early afternoon is recommended to secure a site. Pets are permitted. The accessible facilities include toilets and tables.
