About

Whitetail Cabin is a historic Civilian Conservation Corps structure built in the 1930s that once served as a ranger station in the Ashland Ranger District. Now a registered historic site, this 2-room cabin sits at 4,048 feet elevation in an open area backed by ponderosa pine, approximately 20 miles from Ashland, Montana. The cabin sleeps 4 guests on two sets of bunk beds with mattresses and includes an electric range, electric refrigerator, wood burning stove with limited firewood supply, table, chairs, and basic cooking utensils. The property features excellent horse facilities including a round pen corral, hitching rails, and approximately 5 acres of fenced area for livestock. Seasonal spring water is available for livestock consumption only; guests must bring all their own water for drinking, cooking, and washing. A pit toilet outhouse, picnic table, and campfire ring are provided. The surrounding landscape of ponderosa pines and rocky outcroppings offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and winter activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The cabin is accessible by car year-round, though winter visitors should be prepared to hike approximately 100 yards from the parking area depending on road conditions. This is bear country, so guests must store all food, trash, and scented items inside the cabin. Renters are responsible for packing out all trash and cleaning the cabin before departure. The cabin is particularly popular during elk, deer, and turkey hunting seasons.
