Whitetail Cabin

Whitetail Cabin sits in the Ashland Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest, backed by a stand of ponderosa pine in an open area at 4,048 feet elevation. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the cabin served as a ranger station before becoming a registered historic site available for public rental. The two-room cabin sleeps 4 on bunk beds with mattresses and includes a table with 4 chairs, electric range, refrigerator, wood burning stove with limited firewood supply, and basic cooking and eating utensils. Guests must bring their own drinking water, bedding, lanterns or flashlights, matches, toilet paper, first aid supplies, and trash bags. A vault toilet outhouse is located nearby, and an outdoor picnic table and campfire ring are provided. Horse facilities include a round pen corral, hitching rails, and approximately 5 acres of fenced area; supplemental livestock feed must be certified weed-free, and seasonal spring water may be available for livestock only. The area supports hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in warmer months, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing available in winter. The cabin is popular with hunters during elk, deer, and turkey seasons. The surrounding landscape of ponderosa pines and steep rocky outcroppings is home to bear, mule and whitetail deer, antelope, elk, cougar, and bobcat.

Directions

From Ashland, MT travel 5 miles east on US 212. Turn left on East Fork Otter Creek Road and go 12 miles northeast. Turn right on Forest Road 4777 and then right on Forest Road 4466. Whitetail Cabin is at the end of the road.
