About
Camp Gateway at Sandy Hook brings overnight camping to one of the most unique locations on the East Coast: a barrier beach peninsula within sight of the New York City skyline. Part of Gateway National Recreation Area, this tent-only campground offers a rare opportunity to camp near the ocean while remaining close to major metropolitan areas. The campground features 18 individual sites spread across five loops named Ajax, Beach Plum, Cannonball, Dune Grass, and Endicott, plus a group camping area called Nike Loop that accommodates 10-30 people. All campsites come equipped with a fire ring, picnic table, and bear-resistant food storage container. Flush toilets and running water are available within the campground, but there are no showers or electrical outlets. No vehicles are permitted past the parking area; campers must be prepared to walk their gear up to a quarter mile to reach their site. Alcohol, pets, and smoking are prohibited throughout the campground. Sandy Hook offers extensive recreational opportunities beyond camping, including swimming at lifeguarded ocean beaches (Memorial Day through Labor Day), a seven-mile multi-use bike path, hiking trails, world-class birding, kayaking, and fishing. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the United States, and the Fort Hancock National Historic Landmark provide historical interest. Reservations are required and available through Recreation.gov.
