Special Weather Statement issued May 2 at 1:45PM EDT by NWS Upton NY

May 2nd, 1:45 PM — 8:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels, northwest wind gusts between 25 and 30 mph, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread Sunday afternoon for the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island. This forecast considers meteorological, fuel, and land conditions and has been developed in coordination with state fire and land management officials. As a reminder, the annual statewide burn ban remains in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such as machinery or matches and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose of cigarette butts. Please refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for more information on burn restrictions.

About

Belmont Lake State Park is a 463-acre day-use park located in West Babylon that does not offer camping facilities. Established in 1926 on land formerly owned by August Belmont, the park features a 26-acre spring-fed lake and significant wetland complex bisected by Carll's Creek, which stretches 4.2 miles south to the Great South Bay. The park offers 7.6 miles of multi-use trails circling the lake and following the creek, popular for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Visitors enjoy pedal boat, rowboat, and kayak rentals during summer months, with fishing opportunities for trout in spring and bass in summer. The park includes four rental pavilions (Maple, Birch, Pine, and Oak) accommodating up to 200 people, multiple picnic areas, playgrounds, game courts, and ball fields. A 100-foot by 100-foot dog run features separate areas for large and small dogs. The park serves as the regional headquarters for all Long Island state parks and the New York State Park Police. Popular annual events include the Great Jack-O-Lantern Sail, Holiday Tree Lighting, Egg Hunt, and Fishing Expo.
