Air Quality Alert issued June 11 at 2:38PM EDT by NWS Upton NY

June 11th, 2:38 PM — 2:45 PM

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, and Westchester. until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. For additional information, please visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website at, https://on.ny.gov/nyaqi, or call the Air Quality Hotline at 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

About

Camp Gateway Staten Island is a primitive tent campground located within Gateway National Recreation Area at Fort Wadsworth. The campground sits atop a glacial morainal hilltop at the Narrows of New York Harbor, offering some of the most spectacular urban camping views in the country. Campers can see the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the longest vehicle suspension span in the United States, along with the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. The campground features seven tent-only sites, each with a 16x16 foot tent pad, fire pit with grill top, and picnic table. Seasonal restrooms and a cold shower are available. One site is accessible for visitors with disabilities. Reservations are required through Recreation.gov with no walk-ins permitted. Sites accommodate one large tent or two small tents with up to six people. Nearby activities include surf fishing with a license, ranger-led tours of historic fortifications, beach access at Fort Wadsworth, swimming at Great Kills Beach, bird watching, kayaking, and biking.
