Air Quality Alert issued July 2 at 3:05AM EDT by NWS Upton NY
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland. until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. For additional information, please visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website at, https://on.ny.gov/nyaqi, or call the Air Quality Hotline at 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.
About
Camp Gateway Brooklyn occupies a distinctive setting within Floyd Bennett Field, New York City's first municipal airport, now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. The campground provides an unusual opportunity for urban camping, allowing visitors to experience nature while having subway access to Manhattan's attractions. The surrounding 26,000-acre recreation area encompasses grasslands, woodlands, salt marshes, and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge with over 300 migratory bird species. When operational, the campground features tent camping in the Tamarack, Goldenrod, and Wiley Post loops, plus RV camping in the Amelia Earhart loop. Tent sites include charcoal grills, and central water stations provide potable water throughout. RV campers have access to a dump station, though no hookups are available. Generators are permitted during limited hours at RV sites only. The maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights, with tent campers required to relocate every 5 days. Ranger-led programs are offered during summer months, and the area features historic aircraft displays, Civil War-era forts, and Nike missile sites for history enthusiasts. Nearby attractions include biking trails through Fort Tilden and seasonal ferry service from Riis Landing to Manhattan.
