About
Camp Gateway provides an extraordinary camping experience in one of America's most iconic urban settings. Located at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, this campground within Gateway National Recreation Area offers both tent and RV camping without hookups, though a dump station is available for RVs. The facility operates seasonally from April through October and provides direct access to a remarkable blend of natural and historic attractions. The campground features multiple loops including Goldenrod, Tamarack, Amelia Earhart (RV sites), and Wiley Post, with charcoal grills provided at tent sites and limited generator hours permitted at RV sites only. Campers can explore the woodland habitat of Floyd Bennett Field, visit Civil War-era forts, tour restored historic aircraft and Nike missile sites, or venture to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to observe over 300 species of migratory birds. The Q35 bus provides public transportation access to subway stations, making it remarkably easy to tour the Statue of Liberty, catch a Broadway show, or explore Manhattan, all while returning to a tranquil campsite under the stars.
Directions
Public Transportation: Take the Q35 bus to the Flatbush Avenue/Ryan Visitor Center stop. Enter the park through the pedestrian gate, walk around the right side of the Visitor Center, and continue east approximately 1 mile to the campground. Passenger vehicles: Take the Belt Parkway to exit 11S, Flatbush Avenue South. Proceed approximately one mile south to the main entrance of Floyd Bennett Field on the left, the last traffic light before the Gil Hodges Memorial Toll Bridge. Make a left turn at the light, then first left turn and next right turn. Campground check-in is 1 mile ahead on the right. RVs and commercial vehicles are not allowed on Belt Parkway; use I-278 Brooklyn Queens Expressway instead, exiting at Tillary Street (Exit 29) or Atlantic Avenue (Exit 27) depending on direction.
