About
High Rye Cabin is a historic structure built by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1919, originally used as an administrative site until the 1940s. Located in historic German Gulch in the northern Fleecer Mountains, the cabin sits in a scenic meadow and forest setting approximately 20 miles west of Butte. The one-bedroom cabin sleeps four people and includes an outhouse and horse facilities. Water is available from an adjacent creek but guests must bring their own drinking water. Firewood may not always be available at the cabin but can be found nearby. The area offers abundant recreational opportunities including fishing in nearby German Gulch, Beefstraight, and Norton creeks, which provide habitat for various fish species. Big game hunting is popular during fall season, with the Fleecer Mountains providing year-round range for elk and deer. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails are easily accessed from the cabin. Off-road vehicles and motorcycles are permitted on designated trails and roads with proper permits and licensing. Wildlife in the region includes elk, mule deer, moose, black bear, coyotes, wolves, and various birds and small mammals.
Directions
From Butte, take Interstate 90 west and take the Gregson exit. Drive approximately 2 miles and turn left onto Forest Road 83 (German Gulch Road). Follow FS Road 83 for approximately 5 miles; the cabin is located on the right.
