About
Gatewood Group Campground occupies a former fire tower site on a ridge in the Monongahela National Forest at 4,300 feet elevation. This tent-only group campground accommodates up to 30 people and 8 vehicles, making it ideal for scout troops, family reunions, or outdoor clubs. The site features fire rings, picnic tables, and two vault restrooms. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground sits two miles east of Spruce Knob Lake, which offers fishing for stocked trout and boating opportunities with some of the most scenic overlooks in the region. Over 500 miles of hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest, including the nearby Gatewood Nature Trail. Spruce Knob, West Virginia's highest peak at 4,863 feet, lies just 9 miles away and draws hikers and rock climbers. The area's dark skies attract stargazing clubs throughout summer. Wildlife watching is excellent given the ecological diversity of the Monongahela Forest. Bears are present, so proper food storage is required.
