About
Spruce Knob Lake Campground is nestled in a beautiful hardwood forest on a wooded ridge overlooking Spruce Knob Lake in Monongahela National Forest. The campground comprises 28 standard camping units with paved spurs, 2 double camping units, and 10 walk-in camping units, all equipped with fire rings, lantern posts, and picnic tables. Five accessible vault toilets serve the campground, and a solar-powered water system provides drinking water. No electric hookups are available, and firewood is available for purchase on-site. The campground's location near Spruce Knob, the highest peak in West Virginia at 4,863 feet, offers a unique mountain environment. The vegetation atop Spruce Knob has adapted to harsh conditions, with one-sided red spruce deformed by constant westerly winds clinging to the rocky ridges. Due to its elevation, the campground may experience cold fogs and strong winds year-round. Sixty miles of hiking trails crisscross the region, including direct access to the Big Bend River Loop. The nearby 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake offers trout fishing opportunities and features a boat ramp, parking area, and accessible wooden pier. Only electric trolling motors and non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake, and swimming is not allowed.
