Special Weather Statement issued May 15 at 9:53PM CDT by NWS Duluth MN

May 15th, 9:53 PM — 4:00 AM

Dry conditions and gusty winds will lead to near-critical fire weather conditions Saturday. West winds in the morning will turn northwesterly behind a cold front. Sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 25 mph are forecast. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 30 percent are also expected. Together, these conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning. For more information on burning restrictions for Minnesota, see www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.

About

Norway Beach Picnic Shelter is part of the Norway Beach Recreation Area, located on the southern shores of Cass Lake in Chippewa National Forest. This large log shelter is a day-use facility designed for group gatherings such as family reunions, company picnics, and weddings. The shelter can accommodate up to 100 people and features electric outlets, picnic tables, grills, and access to potable water. The shelter sits at the edge of a forest of red and white pines with a white sand beach directly in front. Cass Lake, nearly 16,000 acres with 27 miles of forested shoreline, offers excellent boating, canoeing, water skiing, and swimming. Anglers can fish for walleye, Northern pike, perch, and trophy muskie. Star Island, located in the middle of Cass Lake, features six miles of hiking trails and contains 199-acre Lake Windigo. Nearby hiking and biking trails include the Migizi Bike Trail and Norway Beach Trail. The Norway Beach Visitor Center, a historic CCC-era building, offers interpretive programs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Note that this is a day-use facility only; those seeking overnight camping should look to the adjacent Norway Beach Campground Loop.
