About
Steamer Bay Cabin sits on a gravel beach at the edge of Tongass National Forest rainforest, surrounded by Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and muskeg. The cabin overlooks Clarence Strait with views of rock outcroppings, a grassy estuary, and tidal flats. Brown and black bears, deer, Roosevelt elk, porcupines, porpoises, and whales frequent the area. The modified A-frame cabin features a partially covered deck on three sides, a wood stove for heat, an outdoor fire grill, table with benches, and a wooden cooler box for food storage. A wheelchair ramp provides beach-to-cabin access. No water, electricity, cooking facilities, or firewood are provided; guests must bring all supplies including sleeping bags, cookware, toilet paper, garbage bags, and their own firewood. Saltwater fishing for King salmon runs May through July, silver salmon August through September, and halibut June through September. Nearby Porcupine Creek offers Dolly Varden and pink salmon (July-August). Crabbing, clamming, and beachcombing are excellent, though visitors should check tide tables and be aware of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning advisories.
Directions
Located on the northwest corner of Etolin Island in Steamer Bay, west of Wrangell. Access is 27 miles by boat or 25 miles by floatplane from Wrangell only. A mooring buoy is anchored in the bay for cabin guests. Check tide tables for optimal arrival/departure timing, ideally at high slack tide. Use caution anchoring due to rocky shoreline.
