About
Kunk Lake Shelter is a primitive backcountry shelter in the Tongass National Forest on Etolin Island, approximately 13 miles south of Wrangell, Alaska. The three-sided structure sits on the northeast shore of Kunk Lake at the terminus of the 1.3-mile Kunk Lake Trail. Access is by boat or floatplane to the trailhead at Kunk Creek, then hiking through old-growth forest with approximately a quarter mile of boardwalk. The shelter comes equipped with a woodshed stocked with firewood and a 14-foot skiff with oars for lake fishing and exploration. Visitors must bring their own bedding, cooking equipment, and personal flotation devices. Water is available from Kunk Lake or Kunk Creek but must be treated before drinking. An outhouse is located near the shelter. Kunk Lake offers cutthroat trout fishing from May through September. The area sees light visitor use, making it an excellent choice for solitude in the temperate rainforest of the Alexander Archipelago.
