About
Sitkoh Lake East Cabin offers a remote wilderness experience on southeastern Chichagof Island, about 35 air miles northeast of Sitka, Alaska. This rustic 12x14-foot Pan Abode-style cabin sits at the edge of old-growth spruce and hemlock forest, with muskeg and open meadows to the east. The cabin is one of two public recreation cabins on Sitkoh Lake, with Sitkoh Lake West Cabin located 2 miles away at the western end. The cabin accommodates up to six people with two double bunks and two single bunks. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, table with benches, cooking counter and cupboard, axe or splitting maul, outdoor screened cooler box, and a small skiff with oars for lake travel. An outhouse is located nearby. Creek water is available but must be treated before use. Visitors must bring their own mattresses, sleeping bags, cooking stove, food, lantern, toilet paper, garbage bags, and personal flotation devices. Sitkoh Lake supports cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden year-round. Nearby Sitkoh Creek offers steelhead in spring, pink and sockeye salmon from July through August, and coho salmon from August through September. Deer hunting is popular in the surrounding area, and waterfowl hunting is available at Sitkoh Bay. Past logging activity has left isolated roads available for OHV riding and hiking, and a 4.3-mile trail (in poor condition) connects the cabin to Sitkoh Bay.
Directions
Located 35 air miles northeast of Sitka on southeastern Chichagof Island. Access by floatplane from Sitka (approximately 30 minutes). A third option is to travel by boat to False Island in Peril Strait, then OHV or hike 8 miles via Roads 7540 and 7544, followed by a half-mile foot trail to the cabin.
