About

Greentop Cabin is a historic 2-story log cabin built in the 1940s by a fisherman on the southwest tip of Yakobi Island within the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area. The cabin sits on relatively flat terrain near the rugged, rocky coastline and is protected from the Pacific Ocean by Greentop Harbor. This remote wilderness retreat is approximately 41 miles west of Hoonah and 67 miles northwest of Sitka, accessible only by floatplane (1 hour from Sitka or Juneau, 35 minutes from Hoonah) or boat (1 hour from Pelican). The cabin accommodates 6 people with 1 double and 3 single bunks, and includes a table, benches, cooking area, and a wood stove for heat. An outhouse is located close to the cabin. This is a primitive facility with no electricity, indoor plumbing, or cell phone coverage. Firewood is generally provided but not guaranteed. Drinking water is not available at the cabin, though water can be collected from a nearby small stream. The surrounding area offers abundant seashore life and excellent opportunities for sea kayaking and boating in numerous coves and protected bays, though care should be taken as there are uncharted rocks. Fishing for king salmon is popular. Wildlife includes brown bears, deer, and sea otters. The outside waters around Yakobi Island can be very dangerous, and visitors should be prepared for extended stays due to poor weather.
