About

West Dam Recreation Area sits on the Georgia side of J. Strom Thurmond Dam, providing lakefront day-use recreation on one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. The facility offers 11 reservable group shelters ranging from small covered picnic areas for family gatherings to a large pavilion accommodating up to 68 people for events. The area features a swimming beach, playground, flush restrooms, and drinking water. Hiking trails connect to the broader trail network around Thurmond Lake, including access to portions of the 27-mile Bartram Trail. The lake offers excellent fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and striped bass. This is strictly a day-use facility with operating hours from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM. A $7 entry fee applies (annual passes accepted). Pets are permitted on leash but prohibited on the swimming beach. Group shelters can be reserved through Recreation.gov; unreserved shelters are available first-come, first-served.
